At UAMS, we understand the importance of research and its connection to advancing patient care and improving outcomes. In fact, within the last three years, our residents have contributed to more than 30 PubMed indexed publications and have given numerous national presentations.
“The quality of the research presentations were superb: The residents were well prepared and poised.”

All orthopaedic surgery residents complete a comprehensive research project during their training and are provided opportunities to conduct clinical and basic science research with the assistance of members of the orthopaedic faculty. During PGY-4, each resident presents his/her research project during the James Aronson, M.D., Resident Research Competition at the Annual Arkansas Orthopaedic Forum. Whether clinical or laboratory-based, completed projects should be of such quality that national presentations and publications in a peer-reviewed journal are expected.
“The engagement of residents, fellows, and staff has provided an academic environment that is producing research that is changing and moving practice forward.”
Robert Trousdale M.D.
Professor of Orthopedics

The Resident Research Committee is a group of advisors and contacts from orthopedics, microbiology, endocrinology, physiology, health literacy, health policy/management, pharmacology, and biostatistics who can help residents find the data and resources they need to complete meaningful orthopaedic research. Residents present updates on their research to the committee annually. Biostatistical services, reference software for manuscripts, and assistance with Internal Review Board (IRB) submissions for patient-based research studies are available within the department. Residents who are awarded podium presentations as primary authors at research meetings are supported by the department to cover travel costs.
