The UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is committed to increasing diversity in the field of orthopaedics and actively promotes equity and inclusion among our faculty, trainees, staff and patients. Our goal is to expand the diversity within our department and the field of musculoskeletal health by promoting diversity-related initiatives and culturally-competent education and patient care.

Jack Vander Schilden, MD
Through the generosity of Jack Vander Schilden, M.D., professor and orthopaedic sports medicine specialist, the department offers scholarships to eligible visiting fourth-year medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM).
The department’s education committee will evaluate the applications and award up to five scholarships plus student housing when available per academic year to deserving medical students based on merit, scholarship, and need. Students must apply to the orthopaedic surgery elective through VSAS and complete the online diversity scholarship application.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must be fourth-year medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), accepted as a visiting medical student in the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, be in good standing academically from an accredited allopathic medical school in the United States, and complete the four-week rotation.
