Welcome! We are excited to offer senior medical students the opportunity to participate in our elective rotation for an immersive look at the UAMS Orthopaedic Surgery experience. This rotation offers a firsthand view of our comprehensive training environment and unique program culture, while allowing our team to get to know you better. Throughout this four-week elective, you will work directly with fellowship-trained surgeons who are leaders in their fields, ensuring a rich and rewarding educational experience.

Our mission is to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in orthopaedic principles, focusing on the evaluation and management of musculoskeletal conditions. As a rotating student, you will gain hands-on experience in the operating room and across diverse clinical settings.
Core rotation highlights include:
Comprehensive Evaluation – Conducting targeted medical histories and physical exams.
Diagnostic Imaging– Interpretation of musculoskeletal radiographs and scans.
Procedural Skills– Hands-on training in basic splinting and casting.
Treatment Strategy – Developing diagnosis and treatment plans for common and acute orthopaedic conditions.
Surgical Exposure – Participating in the operative care of diverse patient populations.
Quality Excellence – Prioritizing patient safety and quality within an orthopaedic framework.
How to Apply for a Visiting Student Rotation
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine is a VSLO® (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™) participating host institution. URiM Visiting Medical Student Rotation Scholarships
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery welcomes visiting medical students who are planning careers in Orthopaedic Surgery and are from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) to apply for a 4-week rotation. Through the generosity of Jack Vander Schilden, M.D., the scholarship program aims to encourage the active participation of URiM students within our department and patient community. The department and institution share a mission to promote excellence by recruiting and supporting a wide array of physicians who can serve a diverse patient population and enable our local community to thrive.We are currently accepting applications for the current academic year.
