visiting med students

Applications for Visiting Student Away Rotations in Orthopaedic Surgery Open on April 3, 2023.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery invites fourth-year medical students to participate in our Medical Student Away Rotation at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Our elective rotations offer students the opportunity to receive a robust educational experience from our fellowship-trained academic orthopaedic faculty, many of whom are considered world experts in their respective subspecialties.

Our goal is to provide students with a general understanding of the various types of orthopaedic conditions and procedures and the principles behind the evaluation and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.  Students will gain exposure and experience in the operating room and in various other clinical settings. Medical students from throughout the United States rotate in our four-week elective and gain experience in the following areas:
  • medical histories and physical exams for patients with musculoskeletal conditions
  • musculoskeletal imaging
  • basic splinting and casting techniques
  • diagnosis and treatment approaches
  • operative treatment of common orthopedic conditions
  • orthopedic care in an acute setting
  • patient safety and quality in the orthopedic setting

To apply for a Visiting Student Away Rotation:

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine is a VSLO® (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities™) participating host institution. Students who are from participating institutions in the VSLO program are able to search and apply for opportunities at UAMS in the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities program using the VSLO Application Service.

All medical students interested in participating in a UAMS Orthopaedic Surgery Away Rotation must apply through VSLO.®

Use the VSLO Student Essentials guide to help you access the application service, complete your profile, search for and save electives, and begin the application process.

You must be invited by your Home institution before you may access the VSLO application service. If you have used other AAMC services (AMCAS, MCAT, etc.), you will then sign into the VSLO application service using your AAMC Account username and password. Otherwise, you will be able to create an AAMC account.  You can then submit your application through the VSLO Visiting Student Application Service.
