The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to offer medical students several opportunities to explore mentored research in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

We offer research programs for medical students who are in the College of Medicine’s Honors Program as well as those who seek to do research in orthopaedic surgery outside of the Honors program. Our faculty is always happy to have students involved at any level, any time. Medical students will conduct their research projects with one or more of our outstanding clinical and research faculty members in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.Many students have published their work as peer-reviewed articles, manuscripts, and abstracts presented at national meetings and at UAMS’s Student Research Day.  Clinical faculty members often integrate the medical students into their clinical practice or in the operating room during the summer to experience the real-life application of the research they are working on.  Students working with our research faculty are involved in translational research performed in the Biomechanics Lab and/or human motion research studies conducted in the Human Motion Analysis Lab.

Summer Research in Orthopaedic Surgery

Summer Research in Orthopaedic Surgery is an opportunity for medical students who are between their first and second years to participate in research mentored by clinical and research faculty members in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Research projects may include basic science, clinical, translational, public health, and other topics.  Students may choose from a list of faculty or may independently find a mentor and project. One full-day training on the first day of the summer break (June 1, 2020) is required to begin the summer research program.

Form 1 (interest): Please fill out this form if you are interested in summer research.

Form 2 (agreement): Will be sent out by email once you confirm a mentor and a project. Need one paragraph describing the project. Due March 31 (if receiving our stipend) or May 1 (otherwise).

HIR Stipend recipients will need to fill out W-9 and stipend forms by May 1.

Honors Program

The Faculty of the College of Medicine has created an Honors Program for medical students who desire to do original research in an area of the health sciences.  The Honors Program consists of a research project requiring the equivalent of six months’ research, preparation of a manuscript describing the results in a style acceptable for submission to a peer reviewed journal, and a poster presentation of the results at Student Research Day. Students who satisfactorily complete the requirements will be designated as earning “Honors in Research” on their College of Medicine transcripts, and their diplomas will include the phrase “With Honors in Research”.

Eligibility

Entrance into the program is open to all medical students, except those who are in their senior year.  Students in their first year who have already participated in research in the College of Medicine during the summer prior to matriculation and who otherwise have satisfied the academic requirements for entry may request credit for their prior research work.

Faculty Advisor

Qualified students who have identified an area of special interest are encouraged to seek a faculty sponsor to assist them in defining an area of study and completing a proposal. Research Project

There are no restrictions on the type of project that may be undertaken.  The only requirement is that each project be original research.  In those cases where a student participates in an ongoing research project, he/she must assume responsibility for carrying out the portion to which he/she is assigned.

Stipend

Acceptance of the proposal by the Research Council admits the student to the Honors Program. Support consists of a $3,000 stipend payable in two installments during the first summer of participation in the Honors Research Program.  No additional stipend is provided after the first summer.  A student cannot receive an Honors stipend and additional funding from a second source for the same project.

Summary of Requirements for Completion

• The research project must be presented at Student Research Day, generally no later than the spring semester of the junior year. The Research Council must approve the completed work as fulfilling the requirements of the program.
• The student must prepare a manuscript describing the results in a style acceptable for submission to a peer reviewed journal and must submit the manuscript to the Research Council by the end of the first semester of his/her senior year.

How to Apply

• Application Form – The Application Form must be fully completed by student and faculty sponsor.
• Proposal with title, brief summary of the project, specific aims and methods (one page limit). The proposal must be typewritten on a single page and include the advisor’s name and signature. The proposal should be submitted to the Office of the Executive Associate Dean for Research, Biomedical Research Center II, Room 159-2, 686-5347.

First year medical students will be notified of the application deadline in January. Second year students must submit their proposal by May 1 in their M2 year.

Student Research Day

In March of every year, the College of Medicine hosts a college-wide student research day. All summer research participants are expected to present their research during second or third year. This year, Student Research Day will be held on March 10, 2020.
