UAMS’ Paul Edwards Chosen as Traveling Fellow
Paul Edwards, M.D., an assistant professor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been selected as one of only four surgeons globally to participate in the Insall Traveling Fellowship, which, for the third year in a row, visited UAMS this month.
“This is a great opportunity to both teach and learn,” said Edwards, who graduated from UAMS in 2005 and joined its orthopaedics team in 2015. “I appreciate this chance to work so closely with some of the world’s best knee surgeons and represent UAMS in the process.”
The fellowship is a program of the Knee Society, a group of the world’s most accomplished knee surgeons. It was founded in 1982 to share ideas and scientific information on knee replacement and reconstruction. The fellowship invites four surgeons from around the world to travel to selected institutions for a month of lectures, observation of cases and other educational activities.
Edwards lectures nationally on hip and knee replacement. He has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts and continues to participate in research studies to improve the design and function of total joint replacements.
“Paul has been a fantastic addition to our team, sharing his expertise with our residents and all our staff and pushing us to excel for over five years,” said C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “He is an excellent choice for this prestigious fellowship, which I’m pleased to say has established a great relationship with UAMS.”
In October, UAMS hosted four Insall Fellows, who observed surgical cases performed by Edwards and Barnes, as well as departmental colleagues Simon Mears, M.D., Ph.D., and Jeffrey Stambough, M.D. In addition, the visiting Fellows held lectures and an educational conference at UAMS Oct. 13-17.
“Host institutions are chosen by past Fellows, and it is a tremendous honor to be selected, particularly for three consecutive years,” explained Barnes. “Naturally, it is also an extremely valuable learning opportunity for our physicians, clinical staff, residents and students. We are very grateful to the Knee Society for again selecting UAMS as a destination for the Insall Traveling Fellowship.”
Other surgeons selected with Edwards are Antonia Chen, M.D. Brigham & Women’s Hospital; Jeremy Gilliland, M.D., University of Utah; and George Guild, M.D., Emory University.
