UAMS Orthopaedics Adds Fayetteville Specialist to Clinical Team

By Spencer Watson

“We are very fortunate to bring someone of Dr. Ylanan’s caliber and experience to our team to care for patients in such a vibrant and growing part of the state we serve,” said C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the UAMS College of Medicine.

Ylanan has more than 11 years’ experience in nonsurgical orthopaedic sports medicine. Since 2015, he has directed the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus, where he trained two Southeastern Conference team physicians.

Until UAMS establishes a clinic locally, he will practice at the Shoulder Center of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

“The mission of UAMS to treat all Arkansans is important to me, and I’m pleased I will be able to play a role in that mission,” said Ylanan, who has also joined the College of Medicine faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “I welcome the chance to engage in clinical practice at a research hospital, particularly one of the reputation that UAMS has.”

Ylanan comes to UAMS clinical practice from Advanced Orthopedic Specialists, where he was responsible for overseeing the medical care of numerous University of Arkansas men’s and women’s athletic teams. He previously served as the co-head team physician for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks.

He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in 2004 and is a Fellow of the American Sports Medicine Institute at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
