Stravos Manolagas

Stavros C. Manolagas, M.D., Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the Thomas E. Andreoli, M.D., MACP, Clinical Scholar Chair in Internal Medicine, (former Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Internal Medicine) Director of the UAMS/VA Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases Center, and former Chief of the Endocrinology Section of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System.

He received his M.D. degree from the University of Athens, Greece and his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK. Prior to his joining UAMS, he was Associate Professor of Medicine in Residence at the University of California in San Diego and a Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Indianapolis VA Medical Center at Indiana University.

His scholarly contributions have been recognized over the years with the induction to the Association of American Physicians in 1996; the AlliedSignal award for research on aging in 1999; the inaugural Louis V. Avioli Award of ASBMR, 2000; a Doctor Honoris Causa from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, 2007; the International Bone and Mineral Society (IBMS) D. Harold Copp award, 2013; the William S. Middleton Award of the Department of Vetereans Affairs (VA) for achieving international acclaim for research accomplishments in areas of prime importance to VA’s research mission, 2016; the William F. Neuman Award of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research – the oldest and most prestigious honor to an ASBMR member for outstanding and major scientific contributions in the area of bone and mineral research and for contributions to associates and trainees in training, research and administration; and the 2017 Louis V. Avioli plenary lecture of ASBMR.  He was recently the invited Keynote Speaker at the annual Greek Society of Mineral Metabolism meeting held November 2024.

Dr. Manolagas’ research interests include vitamin D metabolism, interplay among hormones, cytokines, the hematopoietic/immune system and bone, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, mechanisms of steroid hormone receptor action and the discovery of anabolic bone therapies.
