The Department of Orthopedic Surgery welcomes visiting medical students who are planning careers in Orthopaedic Surgery and are from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine (URiM) to apply for a 4-week rotation. Through the generosity of Jack Vander Schilden, M.D., the scholarship program aims to encourage the active participation of URiM students within our department and patient community.
The department and institution share a mission to promote inclusive excellence by recruiting and supporting a wide array of physicians who can serve a diverse patient population and enable our local community to thrive. The department’s education committee will evaluate the applications and award up to five scholarships plus student housing when available per academic year to deserving medical students based on merit, scholarship, and need. Students must apply to the orthopaedic surgery elective through VSLO and complete the online scholarship application.
