C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., among “65 Total Knee Replacement Surgeons to Know in 2020”
C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., Professor and Chair of the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, was recently named in Becker’s ASC as one of the “65 total knee replacement surgeons to know | 2020”.
The surgeons featured on the list have led accomplished careers and hold leadership positions at some of the top institutions across the United States. Becker’s developed the list through nominations and internal research.
Dr. Barnes is the president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and holds the Carl L. Nelson, MD, Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery in the College of Medicine at UAMS. He previously served as AAHKS’ First Vice President, Second Vice President and Treasurer. Dr. Barnes has also served as President of the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, President of the Southern Orthopaedic Association, President of the Society of Arthritic Joint Surgery, and President of the Arkansas Orthopaedic Society. He has also been honored as the Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist by the Southern Orthopaedic Association, listed in “Best Doctors” and “Top Doctors in Orthopaedics,” and is consistently named as one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in Arkansas.
Dr. Barnes is the only orthopaedic surgeon in Arkansas who is a member of The Knee Society, a national organization committed to advancing the care of patients with knee disorders through leadership in education and research. He is also a member of The Hip Society, a national organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge relating to the hip joint. Members inducted into these prestigious societies are nationally-recognized experts in their fields.
Dr. Barnes is widely recognized as one of the foremost joint replacement experts in the nation. He lectures nationally and internationally on total joint replacement surgery and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles on the topic. He also holds four patents for orthopedic devices as the designer of multiple hip and knee implants.
Dr. Barnes received his medical degree with honors from UAMS, where he also completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. He completed his fellowship training in total joint replacement at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass.
