The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a fully-accredited, five-year program in which residents work alongside leading experts who strive to create a learning experience that fosters innovation, infuses camaraderie, promotes critical thinking, and sustains our tradition of excellence. Our philosophy is focused on nurturing orthopaedic talent, educating leaders, and creating a training environment that exposes residents to the building blocks that become the first step of a career characterized by expertise, excellence, and opportunity both nationally at the highest academic levels and locally in the many outstanding community practices throughout the country. Program Leadership

Program Overview

The five-year program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, offers the opportunity to learn from top orthopaedic surgeons and benefit from a diverse learning experience with extensive clinical training in an environment that is both broad in scope and deep in volume and experience. As an orthopaedic resident at UAMS, you have access to tremendous clinical, educational, and research resources throughout your training.

Resident education is supported by specialized clinical training and a strong didactic program that includes a comprehensive core curriculum, monthly grand rounds, a monthly journal club, evidence-based conferences, and weekly subspecialty conferences.  Core curriculum lectures are provided by the orthopaedic faculty or other faculty members within the medical school and combine both the pathophysiology and basic science of musculoskeletal disease and its clinical application.

Over the course of five years, our residents train in all orthopaedic subspecialties with exposure to world-class clinical care at several facilities, including The Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital located at Arkansas’ only academic health center and state-of-the-art level 1 trauma center (UAMS); one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States (Arkansas Children’s Hospital); and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital (Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System) located in Little Rock.  These diverse environments will introduce you to the principles of sound orthopaedic science and provide you with a broad range clinical experiences—in the operating room, emergency department, and many different outpatient settings.
