We are pleased to welcome Jay D. Keener, M.D., as our 2026 Carl L. Nelson, M.D., Distinguished Visiting Professor. Dr. Keener is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis and nationally recognized leader in shoulder and elbow surgery. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions, including throwing shoulder injuries, labral tears and biceps tendon injuries, rotator cuff disease and tears, frozen shoulder syndrome, shoulder and elbow arthritis, shoulder fractures, minimally invasive shoulder fracture fixation, shoulder and elbow joint replacement and reconstruction, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joint injuries, shoulder instability, and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. He is the Chief of the Shoulder and Elbow Service at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Reconstruction Fellowship program at Washington University, where he has served as faculty for 14 years.

Dr. Keener’s research focuses on the natural history of degenerative rotator cuff disease and clinical outcomes for rotator cuff and shoulder arthroplasty surgeries. In 2014, Dr. Keener, along with Drs. Yamaguchi and Teefey, received the Kappa Delta Ann Doner Vaughan Award for their collaborative efforts in research related to rotator cuff disease.

Dr. Keener is actively involved in resident and fellowship education and has received numerous awards related to his teaching efforts. Dr. Keener earned his medical degree at West Virginia University, School of Medicine in Morgantown. He completed his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.
