Program Overview

The five-year program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, offers the opportunity to learn from top orthopaedic surgeons and benefit from a diverse learning experience with extensive clinical training in an environment that is both broad in scope and deep in volume and experience. Resident education is supported by specialized clinical training and a strong didactic program that includes a comprehensive core curriculum, monthly grand rounds, a monthly journal club, evidence-based conferences, and weekly subspecialty conferences.  Core curriculum lectures are provided by the orthopaedic faculty or other faculty members within the medical school and combine both the pathophysiology and basic science of musculoskeletal disease and its clinical application.

Over the course of five years, our residents train in all orthopaedic subspecialties with exposure to world-class clinical care at several facilities, including Arkansas’ only academic health center and state-of-the-art level 1 trauma center (UAMS), one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States (Arkansas Children’s Hospital), and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital (Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System) located in Little Rock.  These diverse environments will introduce you to the principles of sound orthopaedic science and provide you with a broad range clinical experiences—in the operating room, emergency department, and many different outpatient settings. Our Mission 

Our residency training program’s mission is to provide qualified resident physicians with a high-quality graduate training program that will enable them to practice the specialty of orthopaedic surgery, enter into training in an orthopaedic subspecialty, and/or enter into an academic career in the specialty of orthopaedic surgery.  Our educational programs are closely aligned both with our top-ranked clinical practice, in which we provide exemplary orthopaedic care, treating all patients with uncompromising dedication and skill, as well as our biomedical research activities, giving residents the opportunity to pursue new knowledge and follow how research is translated to improve patient care. We work closely with many disciplines across campus and with leading academic institutions to build and maintain clinical and research collaborations that expand these learning opportunities for our residents, faculty, and staff. By extending our talents outside the walls of our hospitals and clinics, we promote the health and well-being of communities— locally, nationally, and internationally.
