The John D. Vander Schilden, M.D. Visiting Medical Student Diversity Scholarship

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is committed to increasing diversity in our field and encourages medical students who are underrepresented racial minorities to apply for a four-week visiting student rotation to gain clinical experience in orthopaedic surgery.

Through the generosity of Jack Vander Schilden, M.D. orthopaedic sports medicine specialist in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UAMS, the department offers up to five scholarships to eligible fourth-year medical students to supplement the cost of travel and living in Little Rock during our one-month senior medical student elective rotation in orthopedic surgery. The department’s education committee will evaluate the applications and award up to five $1000 scholarships plus student housing when available per academic year to deserving medical students based on merit, scholarship, and need.

Students must apply to the orthopedic surgery elective and complete the online diversity scholarship application.

To be eligible, applicants must be a fourth-year medical student who is a member of an underrepresented racial minority group, accepted as a visiting medical student in the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, be in good standing academically from an accredited allopathic medical school in the United States, and complete the four-week rotation.
