The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery invites fourth-year medical students to participate in our Medical Student Elective Rotation at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Our elective rotations offer students the opportunity to receive a robust educational experience from our fellowship-trained academic orthopaedic faculty, many of whom are considered world experts in their respective subspecialties.  Our goal is to provide students with a general understanding of the various types of orthopaedic conditions and procedures and the principles behind the evaluation and treatment of patients with musculoskeletal conditions.  Students will gain exposure and experience in the operating room and in various other clinical settings. Medical students from throughout the United States rotate in our four-week elective and gain experience in the following areas:

  • medical histories and physical exams for patients with musculoskeletal conditions
  • musculoskeletal imaging
  • basic splinting and casting techniques
  • diagnosis and treatment approaches
  • operative treatment of common orthopedic conditions
  • orthopedic care in an acute setting
  • patient safety and quality in the orthopedic setting
